Scientific research must generate reliable data in order to allow meaningful interpretation and subsequent practical application. Sound scientific planning and the employment of quality research practices provide the basis for meaningful conclusions. Rigorous and scientifically valid studies enable researchers to develop useful drug products that can potentially address unmet medical needs or improve upon existing commercialized therapies.
Reliable data are collected when the study design is outlined prior to beginning the work. This requires advance planning to allocate resources, obtain materials, schedule study events, prepare study records and complete training. Sound scientific planning includes appropriate experimental controls, and helps the scientist to eliminate, control or better understand variables that impact the study.
Study data and interpretations can only be verified if the study activities are formally recorded in sufficient detail to allow the reconstruction of events, permitting the work to be reproduced/verified independently, at a later date. Additionally documentation may be reviewed in support of internal verification, publication, due diligence or commercial development.
